The primary purpose of the New Jersey Music Educators Association Collegiate Internship Program (NJMEA CIP) is to provide collegiate students with an opportunity to apply practical teaching experience prior to student teaching.  The student will learn how to organize, plan, and execute a major performing event, production, or convention.

 All of which you will not find in a text book!

NJMEA Collegiate Internship Program Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:  What is the NJMEA collegiate internship program?

A: The NJMEA CIP is an opportunity to apply your teaching talents outside of the classroom!

Q: What are the requirements to joining the internship program?

A: The requirements are that you must be or have:

  1. At least “junior” academic status.
  2. A minimum grade point average of 3.0..
  3. Obtain a positive recommendation from your chapter adviser.
  4. Maintain active membership with NJCMENC/NJMEA.
  5. Reliable transportation and willing to do a little traveling.
  6. Be available on activity dates.
  7. Be willing to provide some time on weekends depending on the project you are assigned to.
  8. Pass a short interview.
  9. Willing to accept a challenge!

Q: What benefits will I gain from being an intern?

A: Upon completion of the internship program, you will gain the following:

  1. A letter of commendation from NJMEA.
  2. Your name printed in “Tempo” magazine under the state resource personnel section.
  3. Senses of satisfaction that you helped make a positive impact on a student!
  4. EXPERIENCE THAT WILL HELP YOU IN THE FUTURE!
  5. A support group to talk about the weekly experiences.

Q:  What is the time required of me during the internship program?

A:  The amount of time you will need to invest is based on the individual program you are assigned to work.  (Ex: You are assigned to work with Marie Malara and the state convention.  You will need to invest time based on the planning and execution of the convention.)  After that convention is done, you are free!  Simply put, time is negotiable; however it all depends on what you and your “Mentor” work out.  The internship period is good for one academic year, with some projects working over the summer months.  Once a particular project is complete, you can request another one depending on your availability. For that, please refer to the NJMEA calendar.

Q: Are their any accommodations that would apply to me?

A:  There are accommodations such as but not limited to:

  1. Mileage to activity and events
  2. Meals (if applicable)
  3. No paid stipend for internship
  4. Possibility of using the internship program at your school in conjunction to a special field assignment, practicum experience, outreach project, community service project etc.

Q: What types of intern positions are available?

A: The positions available are:

  1. Regions I, II, and III
  2. All-State

Based on your interest and availability to travel, you can choose an intern position based in your immediate area (i.e. where your college is located or your home region) or state-wide on the All-State level.

We have positions available in:

  1. All-honors ensembles (chorus, band(s), orchestra, jazz, opera) Under the direction of your region or All-state procedures personnel
  2. Festivals  (marching band/concert band(s), orchestra, choral, opera, jazz) Under the direction of your region or All-state procedures personnel
  1. Conventions (if your region hosts one or state level February, summer workshop, and NJEA Atlantic City) This area is under the direction of Marie Malara
  2. Productions (if you are interested in learning about how production/ stage work go together) This area is under the direction of Joe Cantaffa

Q: How do I apply to the internship program?

A: Click on “Apply” to program and read the instructions carefully! Please note that the application is in PDF format.  This means that you can fill out the form on line, however, you need to send the completed application via Email to njmeacip@gmail.com. (Please note:  Before you apply to the program, you must familiarize yourself with the NJMEA calendar to see what you would be available to work prior to applying to the program!)

Q: Who can I contact if I need more information about the program?

A:  You can first talk with your Faculty Advisor and start from there!

Q: Who will I be working with if I am chosen for the program?

A: You will be placed with a “Mentor” who will be your go-to person for all aspects of that particular project you are assigned to.  The requirements of that project are solely based on the need from the particular “Mentor.”

Q: What can I expect if I am chosen as an intern?

A: With this program, you can expect to work hard!  This is not a one time volunteer and you are done type program!  You can expect to learn how to plan for a major event, audition, rehearsal(s), performance weekend, etc…  The opportunities are endless!  Keep in mind that as a college student, you will need to be supervised while around school children!

Q: What would be my responsibilities as an intern?

A: Your responsibilities would be:

  1. Attend the activity (i.e. auditions, rehearsals, concerts, conventions, etc.
  2. Duties would be based as per the Performance, Procedures, and or Convention chair.
  3. Not to handle any money
  4. Cannot be left alone or in charge of any student at any time!

All-State (NJMEA): These projects are under the direction of the individual procedures personnel.
